Tai Chi For Seniors

Tai Chi for seniors has been the focus of many studies. This is because the ancient Chinese exercise style can help seniors improve their mental and physical function. Tai Chi movements have helped seniors increase their physical functionality. This research was conducted to determine if a six-month Tai Chi exercise routine would improve self reported physical function among physically inactive, healthy older adults. This study compared older adults in the control group (naturally inactive), those in the three different Tai Chi categories (over 60’s, healthy, and sedentary) and those in the intervention group (regular daily Tai Chi exercises). The results showed a significant improvement in all three categories of patients following regular Tai Chi exercises.

A growing number of senior citizens are turning to Tai Chi as a means of helping them stay fit and live longer. Over the past several years there has been an increase in the number of seniors seeking physical rehabilitation services due to injuries and medical issues. Studies have shown that over sixty percent of elderly individuals suffer from one or more back injuries and nearly twenty percent suffer from one or more hip and knee problems. Research has also shown that over sixty percent of individuals suffering from arthritis report experiencing difficulty in using stairs. This could mean that an elderly person has difficulty getting around and climbing stairs. If a person cannot walk up stairs or get to a higher level due to their age it will limit their independence and decrease their overall quality of life.

As more people become aware of the benefits of Tai Chi, they are making it available in more senior centers across the country. It is important that seniors understand the risks involved in engaging in a Tai Chi workout routine so that they can make an informed decision about participating in a Tai Chi for seniors workout program. In order to receive optimal results, it is important to take part in a regular Tai Chi workout routine that will last a full six months. It is also important to understand the basic principles of this ancient exercise technique to maximize the benefits received from Tai Chi for seniors workouts. It is essential that you work with your Tai Chi instructor and receive instruction on the proper movements and form of each movement so that you are able to fully reap the health and fitness benefits from this ancient exercise routine.
